Getting Here

Feel free to contact me before hand

which would be best, if you have any questions!

It is a remote area!

By car/ From San Jose there are two routes:

Driving Route 1)  Take the highway through Braulillo Carrillo Park north from San Jose. When you come down out of the mountains, take a left at the intersection and go to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui.  At Puerto Viejo, take a left to go to La Virgen, and go through the town. Just outside the town there is a left turn onto a dirt road, and the Sarapiqui bridge is visible right there, where Hacienda Pozo Azul is located.

*Cross the bridge, go up the hill, and turn right to the town of San Ramon. Immediately after the soccer field in San Ramon, turn left and follow the main road. Look for signs leading to the Santuario de mariposas. There will be a left turn onto a smaller road about 6 km from San Ramon. Here there is a clearly marked sign pointing to the Santuario de Mariposas (butterfly santuary). Go down a steep hill, over a bridge, and up a steep hill and you are at the entrance to the Mariposario. Keep going straight, the camping site is about 700 meters beyond the turn off to the butterfly farm (Mariposario). It is immediately after a high wooden bridge and on the left.

Driving Route 2)  Go through Heredia, Barva, Carrizal, Vara Blanca, San Miguel, to La Virgen. Turn right at the Sarapiqui bridge where Hacienda Pozo Azul is located. Follow, then, the directions listed above in the first route*.

By Bus from San Jose

From the Caribenos Bus terminal on the north side of San Jose, there are two routes:

Bus Route 1) The first is the most direct and simple, as well as scenic. 1] Buy your ticket to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui via Vara Blanca. After riding about 1.5 hours, tell the bus driver you want to get off at Hacienda Pozo Azul. At this intersection, you can see the bridge over the Sarapiqui river. From this intersection, there are only two buses which go up to San Ramon, one at 12.30 pm, and another at 4 pm. There is NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION FROM SAN RAMON TO THE CAMPING SITE.  From San Ramon, it is quite a long walk [8 km] to the campground, so I urge you to contact me and make arrangements beforehand. I can pick you up there, or even in La Virgen if you wish. See instructions above for driving if you are passionate about walking.

Bus Route 2) Take a bus from the Caribenos terminal to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui. Its about an hour and a half trip. There you will have to take another bus to La Virgen, and the same two buses mentioned above leave Puerto Viejo for San Ramon at 12 noon and 3.30 pm. Either way, you need to get to the intersection at the Sarapiqui bridge and Hacienda Pozo Azul and from there to San Ramon. Again, there is NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION FROM SAN RAMON TO THE CAMPING SITE. Please contact me for pick up.
